1. Topic Introduction

Possessive adjectives are words used to show possession, relationship, or belonging.

They answer questions such as:

  • my book
  • your house
  • his car
  • her idea
  • our school
  • their family

In French, possessive adjectives are placed before the noun and they agree with the noun, not with the owner.

Compare:

French SentenceMeaningPronunciation
Mon livreMy bookmon leevr
Ma maisonMy housemah meh-zon

The adjective changes because livre is masculine and maison is feminine.

This is one of the most important grammar points because French possessive adjectives depend on:

  • gender of the noun
  • number of the noun
  • person of the owner

2. What a Possessive Adjective Does

A possessive adjective always comes before the noun and indicates who the noun belongs to.

StructureMeaning
possessive adjective + nounownership / relationship

Examples

French ExpressionMeaning
Mon sacMy bag
Ton livreYour book
Sa voitureHis / her car

The noun stays the central word, and the possessive adjective changes according to grammar.
