In French, adjectives do not always stay in one fixed position. Some adjectives come:

  • after the noun
  • before the noun

This is different from English, because English usually places adjectives before the noun.

Compare:

French SentenceMeaningPronunciation
Un livre intéressantAn interesting bookuh(n) leevr ahn-tay-ray-sahn
Un petit livreA small bookuh(n) puh-tee leevr

In the first sentence, the adjective comes after the noun.
In the second sentence, the adjective comes before the noun.

So adjective position is not random. It follows important grammar patterns and meaning rules.
