Day 8 — How to Guess the Gender of French Nouns?

1. Topic Introduction

In French, every noun has a grammatical gender. A noun is either:

  • masculine
  • feminine

This gender is not always connected to natural gender.

Example:

  • le livre = the book → masculine
  • la table = the table → feminine

A book is not male, and a table is not female, but grammar assigns gender.

This is why every noun must be learned with its article, never alone.

Correct learning:

  • le livre
  • la table

Not:

  • livre
  • table

Because the article tells you immediately whether the noun is masculine or feminine.

At advanced levels up to C1, correct gender remains extremely important because article mistakes affect sentence accuracy everywhere.

2. Main Rule: Gender Must Always Be Learned With the Noun

2.1 Why Gender Matters

Gender affects:

  • articles
  • adjectives
  • pronouns
  • sentence agreement

Example:

MasculineFeminine
le livre est grandla table est grande

Notice:

  • grand changes to grande

So gender affects more than just articles.
