Day 7 — Definite and Indefinite Articles

In French, a noun almost always comes with an article. An article tells us whether we are speaking about:

French articles are divided into two main groups:

  • gender (masculine / feminine)

2. Definite Articles (Le, La, L’, Les)

2.1 What is a Definite Article?

A definite article is used when the noun is specific, known, or already identified.

English:
the book, the table

French:
le livre, la table

2.5 Singular Before Vowel or Silent Hl’

When a singular noun begins with a vowel or silent h, le or la changes to l’.

This avoids two vowel sounds together.

Before vowel, liaison happens:
