Day 4 — Silent Letters

1. Topic Introduction

In French, many letters are written but not pronounced.
These are called silent letters.

This means:

  • you see the letter
  • but you do not hear it clearly when speaking

This is one of the biggest differences between English and French.

Very often, silent letters appear at the end of words.

Today we will learn the main silent letters:

D, E, G, H, P, S, T, X

These letters are very common in French, so understanding them early is extremely important.


2. Main Silent Letters and Rules

Silent D

Rule

When D comes at the end of many words, it is often silent.

⚠️ Even though D is written, you usually do not pronounce it clearly.


Silent E

Rule

Final E is often silent.

This is extremely common in French.

⚠️ Final E disappears in pronunciation.


Silent G

Rule

Sometimes final G is silent.

Rule

In French, H is never pronounced like English H.

French H is silent.

Final P is often silent.

Meaning:

The cat is on the table.
The man opens the door.
The coffee is hot.
The weather is nice today.
The car is in front of the hotel.


5. Memory Practice

Read slowly and notice silent letters:

grand
chaud
table
homme
temps
chat
deux

Important: Do not pronounce the final silent letter.

Examples:

  • chat → sha
  • deux → deu
  • temps → tahn

Note:

From now on, always observe two things in every word:

  1. Which letters are written
  2. Which letters are silent

This habit is what builds strong pronunciation for advanced French up to C1
