Day 2 — Accent Marks (É, È, Ê, Ë)

Accent marks usually appear on the letter E, because E can have many sounds in French.

The four common accents you must learn first are:

2. Accent Types and Pronunciation

1. Accent Aigu (é)

Rule

The accent aigu (é) appears only on the letter E.

It produces a clear “ay” sound, similar to the sound in “say”.

2. Accent Grave (è)

Rule

The accent grave (è) makes the sound open, like “eh” in bed.

It is used to change pronunciation and sometimes to distinguish between words.

3. Accent Circonflexe (ê)

Rule

The accent circonflexe (ê) looks like a small hat (ˆ).

It usually means that an old letter “S” existed in the word in Old French.

It also changes pronunciation slightly to a long open sound.

Rule
